Canyon County approves smaller Melba area of impact to comply with state law

The county adopted an ordinance shrinking the land south of Melba where the city has planning influence, covering about 585 acres, as required by a 2024 state law update. The change sets a boundary only and does not approve any buildings or homes.

The City of Melba is asking Canyon County to shrink the area around the city where the county handles growth decisions, pulling back the southern edge. The city says the southern land sits below a cliff band and over lava bedrock, making water and sewer service too costly, and the change is requested to comply with a 2024 state law update. The current city covers 303.48 acres, and the proposed area of impact covers 1,265.39 acres.

The applicant, City of Melba, represented by Kate Dahl, requests an ordinance update to comply with State Law 67-6526, by proposing to reduce Melba’s area of impact on the south.
